BIG THIEF

Big Thief, Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA 10/30/2025

Big Thief’s rise over the past decade has felt both inevitable and hard-won. Their blend of intimacy and expansiveness, anchored by Adrienne Lenker’s brilliant songwriting and Buck Meek’s instinctive guitar work, has quietly drawn a massive following. Having last seen them in 2018 at Terminal West, a cozy 600-capacity venue, it was surreal to witness over 4,600 fans filling the sold-out Fox Theatre seven years later.

The night opened with Lomelda, the project of Texas songwriter Hannah Read, performing as a six-piece band. Their set was a perfect prelude: warm, understated, and deeply sincere—clearly cut from the same fabric as Big Thief, yet distinctly their own.

Big Thief took the stage with an extended, spellbinding version of “No Country” from this year’s Double Infinity, setting the tone for nearly two hours of musical magic. The crowd’s energy ignited a few songs later when the unmistakable chords of “Vampire Empire” rang out. After that, few people stayed seated.

The four-piece moved through their set with orchestral power and playful looseness, filling the Fox with sound that felt alive and unpredictable. One of the most endearing moments came when Lenker stopped midway through a new song, laughing as she realized they’d been playing it in the wrong time signature, then restarting as if to prove there’s beauty in imperfection.

“Spud Infinity,” from 2022’s Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You, was a highlight—equal parts transcendence and hoedown, with the audience dancing and singing along.

By the time the final notes faded, it was clear Atlanta’s love for Big Thief had only deepened. Here’s hoping it won’t be long before they return.
