Conan Gray brings the Wishbone World Tour to Philadelphia
On Monday, March 2nd, the “coneheads” went all out at Conan Gray’s Philadelphia show at Xfinity Mobile Arena in celebration of the “Wishbone World Tour.” With this being Conan’s first arena tour, fans were more excited than ever to hear their favorite tracks, new and old, in an arena setting. Joining Conan on tour is Australian indie folk artist Esha Tewari.
Starting the night off right, Esha Tewari and her band took the stage, starting off her set with “Bad Decision” off her 2024 EP, “Better Off.” This tour was Esha’s first time performing live with a full band, as she mentioned on social media a few months prior. Adding a full band was incredible to hear live, as her drummer and guitarist added an extra kick to her music, adding amazing-sounding harmony and rhythm. Her setlist also featured her TikTok viral song, “You Were Mine”, and the arena shone bright as fans gathered together with their flashlights, and a couple of songs off her newest EP, “What Makes A Girl,” which were “About Me” and “Muse.” Although being an opener, Conan fans proved they know Esha’s discography well, as fans were still singing along to every lyric. Overall, Esha Tewari and her band put on an excellent performance.
With some downtime, the coneheads know how to keep themselves entertained, as the crowd started doing the wave, and I’m happy to say that it succeeded and made its way through the whole arena multiple times! But then, the moment was finally here. “Bad Idea Right?” by Olivia Rodrigo started playing, and the fans knew exactly what was going on… Conan was coming on soon, and next thing you know, the arena went dark, and Conan hit the stage riding his bike, opening with “My World.” Conan’s energy was infectious, as the sea of sailor hats in the crowd started jumping up and down, having a wonderful time. Conan’s show was divided into four acts, each featuring a different beautiful set pieces. The first act was set in a cornfield and featured the songs “Never Ending Song,” “Care,” and Wish You Were Sober.” The tone shifted as Act 2 Began, as Conan had a slight wardrobe change into his sparkly pajamas, and layed into a large bed surrounded by clouds. “This act featured “People Watching,” fan favorite “The Cut That Always Bleeds,” Nauseous,” and “Eleven Eleven.” Eleven eleven was very special, as the Philadelphia coneheads came together for a special fan project. Phone Flashlights started to come on, with a green light, which made for a beautiful and intimate moment, which Conan was very grateful for.
Halfway through the show, Conan introduced his special segment called “Conan’s Campfire.” On this segment, Conan performs an acoustic version of a song that he normally doesn't play on his tour setlist. For Philadelphia’s show, Conan played “Crush Culture.” Longtime fans were very pleased by this song choice, as the song is off his 2018 EP, Sunset Season. After a cozy campfire song, Conan moved on to Act 3, and the set changed once more into a boat in a river. Conan popped out of the boat in another new white and blue outfit. This act featured “Romeo” and “Heather”. During this 3rd act, Conan introduced another segment where he gives a fan the opportunity to choose the next song, but here is the catch. Conan brings out a wishbone, and if the fan gets the long end, they get to choose, but if Conan gets it, he gets to choose. After a long and careful search, Conan spotted a fan dressed as a carrot. Fun fact: Conan’s favorite cake is carrot cake. The carrot ended up getting the long end of the Wishbone, and between “This Song” and “Sunset Tower,” they chose “Sunset Tower,” and the crowd went insane in joy. Fans were also in for another surprise, as Conan introduced an unreleased song called “The Best,” and provided the lyrics on screen so that everyone could still sing along.
At last, the final act was here. Conan performed a couple of his most popular songs that went viral on TikTok, “Maniac” and “Vodka Cranberry,” which was his “last song.” But of course, fans wanted an encore, so Conan returned to the stage in a beautiful blue sparkly marching band uniform and performed “Memories” and “Caramel.” Overall, Conan Gray’s Wishbone World Tour truly has something that everyone can enjoy. The amazing backing band, the set pieces, the costumes. You can tell a lot of care and effort went into this tour, and it surely paid off.
