JAPANESE BREAKFAST
Japanese Breakfast, The Met, Philadelphia, PA 5/16/25.
Japanese Breakfast’s return to Philly was magical! The last time I had seen Japanese breakfast was her legendary Halloween show where singer Michelle Zauner was dressed up as Gandalf so I couldn’t wait to see them again. The show opened with Ginger Root, an indie soul band from California. The singer who is also the keys player came out waved to the crowd and did a giant jump kick in the air before beginning the set. During their set you couldn’t help but notice their videographer while was feeding live onto two screens on each side of the stage in really cool psychedelic style. He brought out a really cool instrument that looked like a tiny piano that he blew into and it made a really funky sound. My favorite song they played was a song called “Giddy Up” that really got everybody moving and cheering along. Japanese breakfast came out to a pitch black stage and then Michelle came out holding a lantern and then got her acoustic guitar and sat in the giant clam shell on stage with each guitarist sitting on the bottom steps in front of her. They led off with “Here Is Someone” then “Orlando In Love” and then into “Honey Water” which broke into a huge guitar solo where Michelle lifted the guitar over her head at the end. The band played a Little Big League cover which always makes the Philly fans reminisce of the earlier days. In the middle of the set Michelle got back into the clam shell which got the crowd to erupt in cheer again. When Michelle came out and banged the gong and went into “Be Sweet” everyone had their phones out knowing this big moment in the she was coming. The band brought Ginger Root back out for “Everybody Wants To Love You” and then thanked their hometown fans for an incredible night.
