R&B Lovers Tour Celebrates the Legacy of 90s R&B at Toyota Center
The R&B Lovers Tour stopped at Toyota Center on Saturday night, bringing together a lineup of artists whose music helped define an era. Featuring Ginuwine, Dru Hill, Joe, Kut Klose, and Keith Sweat, the evening was packed with hit records, live vocals, crowd interaction, and enough nostalgia to transport fans back to the golden age of 90s and early 2000s R&B.
Ginuwine opened the show and immediately set the tone for the night with his charisma, humor, and effortless stage presence. Accompanied by two backup singers, he kept the audience engaged from start to finish, tossing roses into the crowd and encouraging fans to sing along throughout his set. The crowd enthusiastically answered his call-and-response moments and was on its feet for "None of Ur Friends Business," singing every word back to him.
His set featured fan favorites including "Differences," "You Owe Me," "In Those Jeans," and "So Anxious." During "So Anxious," Ginuwine let the crowd handle the iconic opening before taking over and finishing the song with an impressive a cappella moment. His dance moves were still as smooth as ever, drawing screams from fans throughout the arena. As soon as he began removing his jewelry on stage, the audience knew what was coming next. Moments later, he made his way into the crowd for a performance of "Pony," creating one of the night's most memorable moments. He wrapped up his set dancing off stage to Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," leaving the audience energized for what was to come.
Next up was Dru Hill, who proved that their signature blend of harmonies and choreography remains just as impressive as ever. Accompanied by two dancers, the multi-platinum group delivered synchronized choreography throughout their set, particularly during "Tell Me," which received one of the strongest reactions of the night.
The group showcased exactly why they remain one of R&B's most celebrated vocal groups. Several a cappella moments throughout the set served as a reminder that Dru Hill's harmonies remain one of the group's greatest strengths. Their vocals shined during "In My Bed," where the audience erupted in applause after hearing their layered harmonies fill the arena. They also performed fan favorites including "5 Steps" while mixing in moments of humor and audience interaction.
Their set was remarkably dynamic, balancing high-energy performances with more intimate moments that showcased their versatility as entertainers. During upbeat songs, the group delivered synchronized choreography that highlighted the chemistry and stage presence that made them stars in the first place. Just as easily, they shifted gears by taking seats on stools for several songs, creating a more personal atmosphere as they serenaded the audience with their signature harmonies. The contrast between the energetic dance numbers and the stripped-down vocal moments kept the crowd engaged throughout the performance and served as a reminder of why Dru Hill remains such a compelling act to watch live.
Of course, no Dru Hill performance would be complete without Sisqó commanding the spotlight. During his solo segment, the Baltimore native showed that he still possesses the energy and athleticism that made him a star. Accompanied by two dancers, Sisqó delivered a moonwalk, a one-handed cartwheel, and a high-energy dance break before performing "Thong Song."
The energy reached another level when the opening notes of "Thong Song" filled the arena. Fans immediately jumped to their feet, singing every lyric while Sisqó worked every corner of the stage. Dru Hill eventually returned to join him for the outro, bringing one of the night's most entertaining performances to a close.
Joe followed with a set that reminded everyone why he remains one of R&B's most beloved vocalists. Dressed sharply in a black suit and accompanied by a phenomenal live band, Joe delivered a performance centered on musicianship and timeless songs.
His setlist included favorites such as "Stutter," "All the Things (Your Man Won't Do)," "Faded Pictures," "Table for Two," and "I Wanna Know." Throughout the performance, the crowd sang nearly every lyric, often becoming just as loud as Joe himself. At one point, Joe jokingly reminded the audience that the mic was on and that every note they were hearing was live, earning cheers from the crowd.
Joe's stage presence was effortless as he loosened his suit jacket, incorporated a few playful dance moves, and even had fans screaming during a few well-timed hip thrusts. Whether seated or standing, audience members remained engaged throughout his set, many dancing in their seats while singing along to every hit.
Closing out the evening was Keith Sweat, one of the most recognizable and influential figures in R&B history, whose catalog of classic records had the crowd on its feet from the moment he stepped on stage. A pioneer of the new jack swing movement and a defining voice of late 1980s and 1990s R&B, Sweat has spent decades building a legacy that continues to resonate across generations of music fans. His impact on the genre is undeniable, with countless hit songs, multi-platinum albums, and a career that has helped shape the sound of modern R&B. That star power was evident throughout the arena as fans packed the aisles and sang along to every word, treating each song like a soundtrack to their own memories while he delivered one hit after another.
One of the highlights of Keith Sweat's set came when he welcomed Kut Klose to the stage. Together they performed classics including "Twisted," giving fans another dose of nostalgia. Kut Klose also had an opportunity to shine on their own, performing their hit song "Surrender" before Keith returned to finish the night strong. He ultimately closed the evening with "Nobody," providing the perfect ending to a night celebrating some of R&B's most influential artists.
The R&B Lovers Tour was more than just a collection of hit songs. It was a celebration of the artists who helped shape the sound of modern R&B. From Ginuwine's crowd engagement and Dru Hill's harmonies to Joe's vocals and Keith Sweat's legendary catalog, each artist reminded fans why their music continues to resonate decades later. For one night, Toyota Center became a gathering place for true R&B lovers, celebrating the voices, songs, and performances that helped define a generation and continue to influence artists today.
