St. Paul + The Broken Bones, The Eastern, Atlanta, GA 5/8/2026
St. Paul & The Broken Bones drew a sold-out crowd to The Eastern, with opening support from Atlanta local Brother Wallace. To say Brother Wallace and his large band simply warmed up the crowd would be a massive understatement — the audience likely would have left satisfied after their set alone, given how dynamic and commanding the performance was.
Even after that roaring opener, Paul Janeway and his Broken Bones somehow managed to raise the bar, ripping through the first five songs with the relentless energy the band is known for, weaving old favorites and newer material seamlessly from the start. A collective breath was finally released when Janeway eased into the slower “Grass Is Greener,” but the moment didn’t stay subdued for long. Midway through the song, he dropped to his knees, pleading toward the crowd, drawing massive cheers from an audience already fully under his spell.
The tempo surged right back up and carried through the rest of the night, in a performance that felt as joyful as it was cathartic.
Known for their typically colorful stage attire, especially Janeway, the band instead opted for black and white on this 2026 tour, with the lone exception of Janeway’s spiky gold shoes, allowing the music and lighting to provide the spectacle. Those shoes turned out to be a clue for the encore, when Janeway reemerged after each band member took extended solo turns, now draped in a sparkly gold robe that felt equal parts church choir and glam revival. Spiritual is an overused word when it comes to live music, but in this case, it fit — the evening felt transcendent from beginning to end.
